Swan song to Netherlands
Finally the
day arrived when the Wittians boarded the coach for the last tour of the city
before the exchange programme meets its culmination for the academic year. The
students were first taken to the Royal Delft factory. In the time of the Dutch
East India Company, about 400 years ago, the potters came into contact with
Chinese porcelain and created Delft pottery. The world-renowned Delftware is
still painted by hand according to age-old traditions. The Royal Delft
Experience – in the only remaining Delft earthenware factory Royal Delft –
takes you on a journey through the history and the production process of the
pottery.
The
students were divided into two groups and were taken into the factory for a
guided tour. The students viewed the history of Delft pottery and were at awe
to learn and understand the making of it. Students then
indulged themselves by buying trinkets from the factory shop.
The next
stop was Madurodam – mini Holland. Madurodam is a miniature park and tourist attraction
in the Scheveningen district of The Hague in the Netherlands. It is home to a
range of 1:25 scale model replicas of famous Dutch landmarks, historical cities
and large developments. The students were introduced to the history of the park
by a 5 minute video which gave them an insight into how the park came into
being. Then the students moved around the park sighting the major landmarks of
The Netherlands.
They were
then taken to Kijkduin Beach for a small game of soccer and Frisbee. Students
enjoyed themselves as they ran around the beach in the freezing winds and
chilly waters. The day ended with nostalgia setting in with the weather
changing its demeanor to sadness by pouring heavily towards the end of the day
remembering the day we arrived when the weather played truant and it was
drizzling.
