Report
on Anti-Tobacco Workshop
Witty
international School, Pawan Baug, has always maintained the importance of
Health is Wealth. Keeping this in consideration, the school organised an
Anti-Tobacco workshop to educate children on the risky habit of consuming tobacco products and
harmful effects to such habits by eminent Radiologist De Hemal Maniar for
students of Grade IGCSE II.
Dr Hemal Maniar started the presentation by giving details about the
tobacco plant and the harmful toxins that are added to it when cigarettes are
manufactured. Beedis, Zarda and cigarettes contain nicotine which is highly
addictive in nature. Students were then taken through the harmful effects of
smoking or consuming tobacco in any form. They contain carcinogens that cause cancer.
Smoking can affect almost all parts of the body like the mouth, oesophagus,
lungs, stomach, urinary bladder etc. Smoking also increases the risk of heart
attack and stroke.
Dr Maniar explained to
the students how the ‘rogue cells’ or cancer cells multiply uncontrollably and
cause disease that can spread to other parts of the body. Smoking also causes
premature aging and wrinkles.
The students were
informed that passive smoking is equally harmful and were urged to ask their
friends and relatives to quit smoking. Dr Maniar asked student to Say NO to the
first cigarette that is offered to them. He also explained about the withdrawal
symptoms that occur when one tries to quit smoking. The students were surprised
to know that the body takes about 15 years to undo the harm that is caused by
smoking.
The Principal, Mr Bijo Kurian, asserted, “It is absolutely vital that as a school we provide the necessary information on the harmful and the dangers related to tobacco and its consumption. Our current youth can get swayed easily, hence it is imperative to spread awareness against the hazards of smoking in their surroundings to help minimize the menace.”
