Field Trip Report (Grade IV)

Venue: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

Date: 24.08.2013                                Day: Saturday

A clue to future lies in the history and perhaps one of the best ways to learn is to see them in real. Prince of Wales Museum founded more than a century ago, now houses sculptures, paintings, arms and armour and natural history. It was rechristened by the State Government as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

Students of Grade IV accompanied and guided by teachers visited the museum on 24th August, 2013. Welcomed by the lush green lawn of the museum, students started exploring each section. With questions full of curiosity and fun, it striked a thoughtful discussion.

The students saw interesting collections of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Sculptures of the Pre and Pro Historic period were also explored. The Miniature Paintings Gallery helped in understanding socio-cultural conditions of the 14th to 19th century. Students also went through all different facets of Lord Krishna’s life deciphered through paintings, metal and wood arts of that period. The students were excited to see the shield and personal armour of Emperor Akbar.

The journey of money from the uneven handmade metal pieces to the present machine-made Rupee presented an interesting panorama of the monetary system of India in the Coins Gallery. A beautiful range of Porcelain, Ceramics, Jade, Crystal, Enamelware, Oil Paintings, snuff bottles from China, artefacts from Japan was a great attraction.

It was a wonderful experience. The purpose of having a firsthand exposure to history was achieved and exceeded. Students were discussing, debating and trying to relate yesterday with today.
