ESPELLAR COMPETITION
“With better reading comprehension, comes
greater literacy, and greater enjoyment of reading, literature and language.
All from understanding words!”
Let’s debunk one myth
right now – that learning the spelling of words make children nervous or
scared. Spellings do not merely involve rote
learning of words. Rather, it is a comprehensive learning process that allows
children to learn the definition, pronunciation, and roots of the word.
With this in view, Witty International
School, Pawan Baug organised ESPELLAR Competition for the students of Grade I -
IV on 23rd and 24th September, 2015. This competition
aimed to engage Wittians in spelling words in a fun and educational way and
also to enhance each child's memory and to develop better learning skills.
The first level of the competition
encouraged all students to engage with spellings and to promote improved
literacy. Top three scorers from each division represented their own class at
the final level. Tie – breaker round was held to include perfect three from
each class. The brain activity and excitement among the students was just as
stimulating as any physical competition, allowing them to compete in a
supportive environment. For the final level, three students from each division
represented their own class. The competition comprised of various rounds
wherein students had to identify the picture and spell it, give the words based
on its meaning, unscramble the words and fill in the vowels to complete the
word. Rules were clearly stated at the beginning of the each round and they
were rewarded points for their accurate answer. Each round welcomed a new
difficulty.
Students were given proper instructions
to play through each round. They were also supported and asked to write the
chosen word correctly, not to say the letters out aloud until sure about it. All
the contestants gave their best to win the competition and make their own class
feel proud. Audience cheered and constantly encouraged the contestants with
their applause. At the end, a surprise round for the audience was held which
boosted their confidence level.
ESPELLAR Competition was a great
learning tool for students and an excellent revision activity too. Certificates
were awarded to the winners in the assembly. Teachers were immensely impressed
with the enthusiasm and effort that the children displayed by learning their
lists of words.
