Webinar on Mental Health for Secondary Section at WIS, Pawan Baug (2020-21)

In today’s time, the amount of pressure children go through from their peers is incomprehensible. Peer pressure (or social pressure) is the direct influence on people by peers, or the effect on an individual who gets encouraged to follow their peers by changing their behavior to conform to those of the influencing group or individual. This can result in either a positive or negative effect, or both. If the impact is negative, peer pressure can bring about a big drop in the child’s confidence and may show the same in the form of rage, aggression and depression.

The other major issue causing stress in students’ life could be bullying. Bullying is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt another individual- physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Just winning laurels is not the ultimate goal of life. We at Witty International School, always crave for a holistic development of each student so that they are able to face the world confidently. Hence to cope up with these issues an online webinar was arranged on the 11th of July at 11.00 am. Dr.Rahul Khemani - a Consultant Psychiatrist and Ms. Margika Kadam, a Psychologist were invited.

Peer pressure is normal and cannot be eliminated, but the speakers explained through slide shows about its pros and cons and how one can cope up during difficult situations.

According to Ms. Margika Kadam, ‘Peer pressure tends to grow in intensity as students move up through the grades; by the time they reach high school, fitting in has become a priority - and often a source of anxiety’.

Dr. Rahul Khemani explained what is bullying, and how one can manage it diplomatically. He shared strong tips on how to avoid and overcome peer pressure and bullying by being assertive, building up self-esteem and choosing appropriate friends because being bullied can leave an individual to feel helpless, humiliated and depressed life- long.

The Webinar was quite informative and interesting with lot of points for students to ponder upon. A question and answer session was conducted and students posed amazing questions. Doubts were addressed by the guests.
