Healthy Living Workshop on 22nd July,2015 at WIS Pawan Baug

The emphasis on healthy lifestyle should start at a young age. With this in view and in consonance with the Theme of the Year – Health is Wealth; Witty International School conducted a workshop on ‘Healthy Living’ for students of Grade I to IV on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2015.

Children have their own unique nutrient needs and meeting those needs is vital for a child to grow up big, strong and healthy. A child’s diet should consist of a variety of foods that contain a range of nutrients. Keeping this in mind, our guest speaker Mrs. Reshma Gulati provided nutrition information through the five foods groups: breads and grains, meat and beans, fruits and vegetables, milk and milk substitutes, and fats and oils.

Students discussed their eating habits. Students were made aware of the harmful effects of junk food that sets the stage for an unhealthy lifestyle and how children quickly become addicted to such foods.

Students were encouraged to switch to living a healthy lifestyle and enjoy a long beautiful life. They promised to eat more vegetables, fruits, juices and wholegrain foods.

Language Workshop Held at WIS

The teaching of English today has become an arduous task. Unlike the bygone years, the children of this techno savvy era seldom cultivate reading as a hobby. This has an adverse impact on their writing skills as their knowledge of vocabulary remains grim. It is in this context that a Language Workshop was conducted by the Oxford University Press. The resource person Mrs Chumki Biswas focused on the four skills viz Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The teachers were empowered with ample information and grammar based worksheets to make the teaching of English more conducive for a child. Emphasis was laid on the adoption of the play way method to break the monotony of a class. Teachers put forth their queries and got their doubts clarified. Indeed, the workshop proved a boon and provided an impetus to the teaching – learning process.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Vinay Jain – Our Managing Trustee, Principal Mr. Bijo Kurian and Educational Coordinator Mrs. Priyanka Mehrotra for conducting such fruitful and informative workshops.

"A goal properly set is halfway reached" - Abraham Lincoln

When you know how to set and achieve your goals, you’re in charge of your life & you determine the direction in which you’ll sail. With goals, you can chart the course of your life.

Witty International School in association with NIE held a workshop on “Goal Setting” on October 23, 2010. Mr. Mohan Singh, an expert in the field of Advertisement & the speaker, helped our students to understand the importance of goal setting. Students learnt how to develop a plan with a series of actions steps and a timetable for the completion of your goal. They were taught that how completion of each action step will help them get closer to making their dreams a reality.

Mr. Mohan Singh used SMART acronym to explain Goal Setting. SMART refers to goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed. This goal setting theory is generally accepted as among the most valid and useful motivational theories.

The session was interactive, where children actively participated in the question & answer sessions. Mr. Singh elicited answers from students quite effectively, the examples he gave were clear and helped children to arrive at conclusions effortlessly. Students enjoyed the session and benefited from it.

Seminar on Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

A seminar was conducted by Witty International School on Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) at the Kasturba Hall, Malad on 16th October, 2010.

Ms Leila Benelli, Global ADHD Coach and Inspirational Trainer from Cape Town, South Africa and author of the renowned book ‘My child is driving me crazy’ was the Guest Speaker.

The Chief Guest and Mr. Rajesh Atheide were accompanied by Our Managing Trustee Mrs. and Mr. Vinay Jain, Our Principal Mr. Bijo Kurian, Our Coordinator Mrs. Priyanka Mehrotra and Our Educational Consultant Mrs. Sheetal Kapoor. Our honorary heads have indeed rendered unconditional and wholehearted support for the smooth functioning of this seminar.

Ms. Benelli briefly introduced herself and proceeded to address the gathering on the topic ‘ADHD’.  She stated that one of her own sons was suffering from ADHD and stressed the fact that she too had to cope with the same during her school days. Heredity could be a dormant factor in the transmission of this disorder which is controllable yet incurable. She encouraged teachers and parents to be more tactful in their dealings with the affected children as their apathy could have a detrimental impact on the child. The inculcation of an optimistic attitude in the child and a withdrawal of the child’s innate potential would go a long way in enabling the child overcome and cope with this disorder.

She mentioned that the severity of the disorder reduces tremendously with age. A blessing in disguise could be the fact that these children are very intelligent and focused and can lead extremely successful lives if timely remedial measures are adopted.
Dr. Vinay Jain also spoke on the topic ADHD and added a lot of insight to it with his expertise in the medical sphere and someone who has been with children for duration of fourteen years.  According to him, a balanced diet proves vital in the remedial process. These children should be given an opportunity to burn off this extra energy whereby they are entrusted with responsibilities and encouraged to participate in athletics and sporting activities.

To conclude, patience and tolerance are the predominant virtues needed by parents and educators as an ADHD child is certainly not a burden as perceived by some but an asset to the society.
