International School, Pawan Baug celebrated Van Mahotsav, the Annual Tree
Plantation festival in India with great aplomb and enthusiasm. The primary and
secondary section students of WIS celebrated environment day with the slogan
'Go green'. They began the day by preparing slogans, banners and nature
paintings as a part of the Enrichment Hour activity. Meaningful messages were
put up all around on the importance of trees and how they are the 'Lifelines'.
The programme started with a group discussion by
the secondary students on "Vast Modernization versus Environment"
while the students supported the need for modernization and development, they
categorically stated that the Environment should not be vitiated and came up
with innovative ideas for sustainable development without jeopardizing the
non-renewable resources. Vasisht Varma, student council member stated, “Van
Mahotsav is celebrated as a festival of life. It is advisable to plant native
trees as they readily adapt to local climate, integrate into eco-system and
have a high survival rate. Besides, such trees are helpful in supporting local
birds, insects and animals.” Students worked their hearts out for this day as
they prepared a number of charts depicting the imminent dangers we will be
facing due to destruction of trees. Reigniting the luminous halo of Mother
Nature, students also came up with the brilliant idea of planting saplings on
birthdays, an idea which had lot of potential.
As a part of the tree plantation drive, students had
come all geared up with plant saplings, gloves and small shovels. They
discussed about the different types of saplings, while they dug pits in the
school ground as well as the adjoining vicinity of the school premise and
planted the saplings. Students also resolved to take care of the plantations
throughout the year. Principal Mr. Bijo Kurian quoted, “Trees have longed
served humanity in one form or the other. On the other hand humans have only
threatened their very existence. Now it is our turn to reverse the damage that
we have caused and restore the balance between nature and man and the first
step towards this change is to plant trees. So let us all welcome the monsoons by
planting a tree during Van Mahotsav and nurturing the ones that are already
standing tall.”
The day was indeed a mesmerizing one as it
initiated a new beginning, a new life, and a new era.
