REPORT ON WELLNESS TALK BY NUTRITIONIST SUREKHA PUNAMIYA
At
a young age it is extremely vital to know that one’s food choices can affect
their health in a big way. In order to make students aware about healthy food
items, a Wellness talk was arranged at Witty International school, Pawan Baug, where
renowned nutritionist Mrs. Surekha Punamiya guided students of Grade VI &
VII about healthy eating habits.
Mrs.
Surekha explained about the benefits of carbohydrate,
proteins and fats, minerals. She also enriched students with readymade guide to
stay healthy. The guide comprised of the tips like eating plenty of fruits,
vegetables and grains, controlling sugary, processed food and gaining enough of
sleep in order to stay fit and fine. She explained that unhealthy food does not
provide our body with the essential nutrients, but harm our health as well as
weaken our immune system. She also highlighted the importance of water by emphasizing
on water being our ‘lifeline’.
Most
people know good nutrition and physical activity can help maintain a healthy
weight. But the benefits of good nutrition go beyond weight. With the help of a
PPT and a few examples, Mrs. Surekha explained that good nutrition can help reduce
the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some
cancers, and osteoporosis, reduce high blood pressure, lower high cholesterol,
improve your well-being, improve your ability to fight off illness, improve
your ability to recover from illness or injury and increase your energy level.
She emphasized on having all nutrients
like proteins, fats, carbohydrates and minerals in equal proportion. She also
suggested choosing jaggery over sugar and desi ghee over butter as it is rich
source of nutrition.
Mrs.Surekha explained, “Those who think
they have no time for healthy eating, will sooner or later have to find time
for illness.”
At the end of the session, Mrs. Surekha
also welcomed questions from the students which helped students clarify their
doubts about certain food items and its benefits to heath. She made students
take a health pledge that they would select healthy food in their diet and
reduce consumption of junk food as much as possible.
